Document Summary

We believe that we are free" in the sense that we are in sole control of our actions, that we have free will. In actuality, our behavior is controlled by our genes and the environment. Bringing order to this type of control can lead to a better life for all. As a society we seem more interested in how to better engineer things than people. Rather than leave things to change, we should systematically investigate what types of experiences lead to the best kind of people, and then organize society to endure that people have these favorable experiences. Cats learned how to escape from a crate. Responses that produce relatively favorable outcomes are stamped in and become more probable. Antecedents: stimuli in the environment, the situation. (operant) behavior: may be public or private. Consequences: what happens as a result of the behavior. Can be incremental (i. e. a child gradually learns how to maintain balance while learning to ride a bike. )
