Social norms: advantages of social norms, herd mentality, conforming is contagious. Social contagion: compulsion to join and conform to big crowds, mass psychogenic illness. Solomon asch and normative social influence: we conform to gain social acceptance and avoid rejection. Stimuli are ambiguous: majority is one"s ingroup, proportion of women increase, temne people and innuits. Food accumulation hypothesis: tenne have one predictable crop per year.
