Document Summary

*be able the see the body part, proper clothing. Look for deformity, swelling, discoloration (ecchymosis), redness (rubor) (erythema- flush) Effusion- swelling inside of joint (fluid/extra fluid inside capsule) All joint have capsules (ligamentous structure) that allow movement, synovial lining lubricate joint inside capsule. Edema- fluid that accumulates in soft tissue (muscle) outside of joint. Pitting edema- leaving a pit when pressure is applied. Discoloration that comes to the surface, something had to tear, something was bleeding. Extravasation- discoloration traveling down a limb, caused by gravity. Fascial planes limits movement of fluid around body parts, can be ripped and lead to extravasation. Feeling for tendons, ligaments, tension in the muscle, heat, swelling, deformity. Look for rom, full active rom (muscle injury when still have passive rom), passive rom, uninvolved side first for resistance, active contraction. Body creates swelling as a protective mechanism, and creates more synovial fluid (anthropometric)
