Subjective data: pain, stiffness, swelling, heat, redness, rom. Joint pain and lof (loss of function) are most common msk concerns. Joint pain 10-14 days after an untreated streptococcal infection (strep throat) rheumatic fever: decreased rom may be caused by joint injury to cartilage or capsule or from muscle contracture (shortening of muscle) Bones: pain, deformity, trauma (fractures, sprains, dislocations, fractures: cause sharp pain that increases w movement. Functional assessment: activities of adls (bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming, eating, mobility, communicating) Influenced by inflammation or rom limitations in joint: assess for impairment in physical mobility, verbal communication. Self-care behaviours: assess risks for back pain or carpal tunnel syndrome, assess for disturbances in self-esteem, loc, body-image, role performance, or social isolation. Palpation: skin temp over joints, look for heat, tenderness on palpation, swelling, nodules/ masses, warmth and tenderness inflammation, palpable fluid is abnormal. Inspect joint area: size, colour, swelling, masses: palpate as person opens mouth: heat & tenderness.
