Rate of growth is slower than infancy; grow about 2-3 in/yr. Full set of primary baby teeth (20 teeth) Less vulnerable to health threats than earlier years. Gross and ne motor skills continue to be re ned. Developing countries" causes of death are: malaria, measles, and pneumonia, malnutrition --> 50% of early childhood deaths. Developed countries have vaccinations, adequate food and medical care. Children in developed countries eat too much unhealthy food! A time of high activity --> high rates of injuries. ~90% right hand preference; preference can be seen prenatal. Adopted children resemble biological parents more than adoptive parents. Identical twins likely to differ --> lying on opposite sides. Size of brain increase gradually during early childhood. Speed up connection and coordination of brain signals. 4-5 year olds: can sit still for story time: 10-15 min. Dif culty remembering life events prior to this hippocampal development.
