Why: experiments are the only method that meets all conditions for causality. What is the value of a control group: gives a baseline measure: accounts for how people"s attitudes and behaviors might change just because they"re participating in a study. Why does it matter whether a relationship is statistically significant? . A relationship between two variables, such that one influences the existence of, or change of, another. Ice cream sales go up and murders go up a third variable is it is warmer out. To really test for cause and effect, we need to conduct experiments. Experimental methods allows us to isolate and identify a cause. Something that can change (vary) and that we measure in research. Independent variable- cause: predicted to cause a change in the dependent variable. Dependent variable- effect: do you like these ads, do you like these brands, do you plan to eat fast food, drink less soda.
