What are limitations of the powerful effects model: media does not effect us all equally, different media have different influence in different situations. What determines whether media will have an influence: the medium (print, tv, internet), the message, the individual, the community. Dominant medium was radio: 60% of people in the us owned a radio, fewer channels/choices so many people tuned in to the same programs. Imagine sitting around your living room or working around the house and you hear the war of the worlds. Everyone who heard the broadcast would be just as panicked as the person next to them. Based on survey data, panicking was correlated with: less critical ability, less self confidence, less emotional security, strong religious beliefs. Evidence that individuals, and specific groups of individuals, react differently to. 1940s presidential election: fdr vs. wendell wilkie.
