Definition - spread of weapons of mass destruction. Vertical - spread within states that already have nuclear weapons. Horizontal - spread to states that do not already have them. Today, we care more about this type (spread of weapons) The effect relative to its size is tremendous. Amount of devastation a nuclear weapon can impose is huge. Prevention - treaties (nuclear non-proliferation treaty (npt)) Negotiated in the 1960s, came into force march 1970. Nuclear weapon states under npt - us, uk, france, russia, china. States that have nuclear weapons outside of npt - india, pakistan, israel, north. States that might be able to produce - iran. Job is to make sure that you are not using technology for building weapons. They act as a watchdog - make sure countries aren"t violating the terms. Assist in peaceful spread of nuclear energy. States that can threaten us with nuclear weapons. States that don"t have nuclear weapons are at risk.
