The president"s job was not always to lead. Fdr"s change in the way we think of the president. Relationship in a democratic sense is not coerced, presidents are not coercive. Making people do something is not leadership. Rather, we think of it as people choosing to follow (self-chosen followership) Hinged on the authority of the office - the person with authority has a better chance of leading. Successful process - getting people to follow your path wherever you go, persuading people to follow. Quality of leadership isn"t tied to what you accomplish. Pendulum idea - we want a good leader but we are afraid of a timer. We want to be led, yet we cherish our independence and freedom. We want a take charge leader in the white house, yet we demand accountable and responsive leadership. We want presidents to have wealth of power to solve our problems yet not so much they can do lasting damage.
