Controlling ourselves (staring and stopping behavior based on our plans: freud"s views of consciousness. We"re moivated to be unaware of some thoughts/memories. Problem: if your mind can repress a painful thought, doesn"t it imply that some part of your mind is aware of that thought: modern views. Consciousness refers to your individual awareness of your unique thoughts. We have mental systems that operate on an unconscious level. For example: percepion operates outside of consciousness. Some processes become automaic: altered states. Involves selecion- some things are atended to. We become aware of atended thoughts or objects. Ex: in a crowded party, we can atend to one conversaion. Dichoic learning test: 2 diferent streams are coming through each ear. We normally focus on one side/input: the fate of the unatended.
