Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities. Those that may be used in problem solving, communicating, or entertaining ourselves or others. There reasons why people want to be creative: need for novel, varied and complex stimulation, need to communicate various values/ideas, needed to solve problem. To be creative you need to view things in a new ways/different perspective. You must be able to generate new possibilities/alternatives. Tests of creativity measure both the # of alternatives that people can generate and the uniqueness of those alternatives. Also, see things uniquely does not occur by change, but more fundamental qualities of thinking. Such as flexibility, tolerance of ambiguity or unpredictability and enjoyment of things unknown. For something to be creative, it doesn"t just need to be novel, but also have value or be needed to the cognitive demands of the situation.
