Document Summary
Care of the adult client with renal and urological impairment. Make sure you understand the difference between the problems with urination ( uria ) including: dysuria, pyuria, hematuria, nocturia, anuria, oliguria, polyuria. What is the difference between the urinary problems of: hesitancy, frequency, urgency, retention, incontinence. Eliminated through the urinary system indicates renal compromise if high. Commonly used to determine renal problems (especially renal failure). Used to determine glomular filtration rate (gfr)(calculated by lab) shows how much creatine is cleared in a 24 hour period. Urine culture (& sensitivity) used to determine infection (uti) Looking for bacterial growth, must be in a sterile container; one time as mid-stream clean catch. If pt has foley catheter, must collect from side port unless brand new catheter. Healthy, intact kidneys don"t let protein in the urine; chronic proteinuria is a sign of kidney problems. Some non-renal causes of elevated bun: infection, steroids, dehydration(if bun is elevated, but renal function is ok)
