Signal for activation or repression of protein complexes (eg. prc2) Can modulate 3d structure loops (eg erna - enhancer rna, and xist rna where there"s long range loops) For females we have 2 x chromosomes so females are mosaic so which x chromosome is inactivated occurs on cell to cell bias. Occurs in xic where inactivation spreads in cis from centre.
