BIOL 522 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Homo Erectus, Introgression, Multiregional Origin Of Modern Humans
Document Summary
Introgression = gene flow from one species" gene pool to another species" gene pool by hydbridisation (mating occured and alleles combined from both parents -> mate further and carry alleles on onto next generation) Introgression gives insight into phenotypes/ understanding how genetic info has been passed down groups over time. Before genetic info could be analysed, people found introgression by looking at fossil records. > oldest modern human fossils found in africa. > other fossils that weren"t similar to africa that was found in eurasia. Out of africa = people came out of a single population in africa and spread out replacing hominids native to eurasia and oceania (replacement) Multiregional = homo erectus migrated out of africa and divided into niche geographical settings and were heavily isolated -> independent evolution of smaller groups. Neanderthal and denisovans stop short of modern humans due to total replacement.
