GEOL 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Cerro Negro, Volcanic Pipe, Fumarole
Document Summary
Shield volcano: broad, gently sloping cone (basaltic) Volcanic dome: looks like the lava has been squeezed out the top (it leaks. Ex: mauna lao, hawaii upwards and then a dome is blasted out at the tip). This is usually felsic lavas because it"s explosive. Cinder-cone volcanoes: when the volcano errupts, it blows pyroclasts out of the top, which settle around the explosion point and leaves a circular cone (also felsic) Ex: paricutin, mexico and cerro negro, nicaragua. Composite volcanoes: when both lava and pyroclastics are emitted and the lava carries the debris down to the bottom, it creates a pointed/concave shaped stratovolcano . Pyroclastic flow: when hot ash/dust/gases come out in a glowing cloud very. Craters: a bowl-shaped pit on the summit of most volcanoes (on top of the vent) Calderas: a huge, steep, depression (kinda like a crater but much larger) around/collpases/erupts because of the magma chamber beneath it.
