CMD 377 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Glossopharyngeal Nerve, Laryngeal Paralysis, Dysphonia
Document Summary
Cmd 377 - lecture 14 - the branchiomeric nerves. Primary function is the transmission of the following information from the head: 3 sensory nuclei associated with trigeminal afferents: Concerned with discriminative tactile and proprioceptive sensations. Terminate in the ventral posteromedial (vpm) nucleus of the thalamus. Relays sensory information from the head before the sensory cortex. Sensory information from the body goes through. Afferent fibers reach the nucleus via the spinal trigeminal tract. Important in processing pain and temperature information in the head. Gives rise to a crossed ascending pain pathway joins the spinothalamic tract terminates in the vpm nucleus of the thalamus. Need a tract for fibers coming in from the face. Those fibers go through the brainstem, but the nucleus is in the spinal cord. Some from the mechanoreceptors of gums, teeth, and hard palate. The 1 motor component of cn v. Masseter (main) makes jaw move up and down. Tensor tympani in the malleus, incus, and stapes.
