CMD 377 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Inferior Olivary Nucleus, Sulcus Limitans, Abducens Nucleus
Document Summary
Conduit function: primary means for connecting information from the cortex to the spinal cord, relay station for several systems. Cranial nerve function: cranial nerves iii xii project to or emerge from the brainstem, various sensory and motor nuclei related to cranial nerve functions found in brainstem. Integrative function: some integrative functions organized at the level of the brainstem, much of this is accomplished by the reticular formation. Structures on the ventral surface of the medulla. Pyramids: between anterior median fissure and anterolateral sulcus, major motor pathway. Olive: also called inferior olives or inferior olivary nucleus, oval swelling lateral to the anterolateral sulcus, relay nuclei for propioception going into the cerebellum. Sulcus limitans: separates motor and sensory nuclei. Facial colliculus: location of the abducens nucleus (cn vi, facial nerve fibers loop over it. Tegmentum: dorsal portion of the pons, contains ascending/descending tracts, also contains the nuclei for cn v, vi, vii, and viii.
