Document Summary

Theory (definition: basic assumptions can"t be proven, set of limited explanations. Models or theoretical paradigms: theories un-testable set of assumptions, underpinnings un-provable beliefs that a theory is based upon, three contemporary models of development, mechanical model: people behave like machines. Conditioning: organismic model: we develop like an embryo. Change is produced by the interaction between biological (internal) events and environmental (external) events. 3 processes/capacities develop over the life span: physical ontogeny: biological regulation, physical maturation. Development that depends on biological and ends in adulthood: habituation: development dependent on learning/environmental experience. Learned behaviors: cognitive generativity: development dependent on combining experience, logic and memory. Research design: cross-sectional- 2 or more groups, 1 time of measure. *problems- shows change/correlation, not what variable causes it: longitudinal- 1 group 2 times of measure. Good to study changes in development, aging or culture/society. Practice effect, experimental mortality, expensive: sequential: 2 groups 2 times of measurement. Best design- can control practice effect, experimental mortality.
