Psy 235 - lecture 1 - experimental method. Asking people to report on their own personality. Raters indicate identification with adjectives or agreement with statements. Many personality measures include some statements worded in the opposite direction. Some people agree with everything on the questionnaire. This is a problem because the answers are not true. People may not have accurate view of themselves. To get rid of bias, researchers often pay participants. Takes away any obligation participant may feel to please the researcher and tell them what they want to hear. Came out of war efforts and the military. Started as a way to screen people to see who was unfit for duty. Try and predict who would develop shell shock (ptsd) Positive correlations - when 1 variable increases, so does the other. Negative correlations - when 1 variable increases, the other decreases. Null correlations - variables are not related. Internal reliability - all items on scale measure the same concept.
