PPD 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Sunk Costs, Customer Service, New Public Management
Document Summary
The more committed, the more productive and motivated the behaviors are. High performing employees are more committed to an organization. Should be fostered through formal and informal mechanisms. High levels of commitment can replace order and control of bureaucratic structures. Just following the rules but not very committed. Define core tasks and find incentives that will induce bureaucrats to behave in a way to accomplish tasks. Want employees to comply and follow the rules or get rid of people that don"t follow rules. Shirking -> they don"t do everything they"re supposed to, they do too little. It"s hard to know it"s happening if everyone is doing it. Sometimes there are forces outside the control of the employee that slows down the work. Sense of purpose, have a good understanding of what"s expected of them. Not doing what they"re supposed to be doing. Leadership -> big area of studying how employees behave.
