Divine law gives you your status in life, depends on what you were born into: allegiance sworn at 12. Boys had to swear allegiance to the monarch: political role= subject. Faithful to monarch and the monarch would protect them: subjects are faithful, political bonds are vertical. They"re hierarchical: john locke"s political community, society is rooted in natural law, all humans have god-given reason. Humans are capable of reason, they can understand order, organization and law: all are equal, free, polity is an artificial construct. It doesn"t objectively live out there, we have created it: polity is territorial, temporary, consensual. Has a place, temporary, and can be changed and recreated: liberty and autonomy are key, individual members bound to community. Can"t think just about ourselves but also about the others in our community: political bonds are horizontal.
