Ethical decision making: aiken"s levels of decision, 1 evocative/expressive. Not a decision based on reflection: 2 moral rules. We begin to think about alternatives and consequences. We think about consequences based on rules learned through religious education, socialization, education. We acquire these rules of thumb for appraising situations and deciding action courses almost subconsciously: 3 ethical principles/ethical analysis. We begin to think about our ethical principles. What values are at stake, in conflict, etc. We begin to analyze the decision in terms of those ethical principles: 4 post- or meta- ethical. Take a giant step back and assess how the values at stake and the decision (and consequences) at hand may affect your entire value structure. You decide based on your entire worldview. Perceive the problem: pa has to see that some decision or situation involves ethical dimensions or standards, 2. Describe the situation: learn and describe the facts objectively.
