Vernix: protects skin from chapping in amniotic fluid. Lanugo: white, downy hair covering body, allows the vernix to stick to the body. Cerebral cortex enlarges and grooves appear on the brain: grooves create a greater surface area on the brain. Fetus spends more time awake: measured using heart rate: 28 weeks: alert 11% of the time. Auditory development: 30-36 weeks distinguish between different voices, heart rate changes to: Heard story everyday last 6 weeks before birth told by mother. After birth used an operate conditioning, suck to the story. 28 weeks: blink eyes in response to surprising sounds. Gain over 5 pounds and grows over 7 inches.
