Theories for the mixed pattern of incubation. Incubation is disrupted if you"re under pressure to solve the problem. Incubation takes place only if the circumstances allow your thoughts to. During mind wandering you can simply allow your thoughts to wander, activation can flow werever the memory connections take it may lead to new ideas being activated. Provides no guarantee that helpful or productive ideas will come to mind, only that more (unanticipated) ideas will be activated. A source of new possibilities that may or may not pay off. Interruption may provide an opportunity for the frustration and fatigue to dissipate. Forget about earlier tactics, freeing you to explore other, more productive avenues. No consensus about which proposal is best. Research provides less guidance than we"d like. Highly creative people relied on analogies, hints, heuristics and hard work like everyone. Creativity may depend on blind trial and error. Able to discern which of the randomly produced products actually have value.
