The Moment of Illumination
-Creative thought goes through 4 stages:
oPreparation
Gathers information about problem
oIncubation
Sets problem aside and seems to not be working on it
Still works but unconsciously
oIllumination
Some key insight or new idea emerges
oVerification
Person confirms that new idea does lead to solution and works details
-“Aha!” experience – people feel like they made a great leap forward – a series of insight problems  moment of
insight
oDiscovered a new approach – one that hasn’t been considered
-Means that you’ve discovered something new to try – doesn’t guarantee that it will be helpful
Incubation
-In this stage, they have set the problem aside – but works on it unconsciously
-This effect is unreliable – some show that it helps in finding solution, but many sees none
-“mind wandering” is relevant due to process of spreading activation – one memory activates related memories
oWhen carefully working on a problem, you try to direct this flow of activation, and end up directing it in
unproductive ways
-Early efforts may have been tiring or frustrating – interruption provides a time to dissipate
Nature of Creativity
-There are few people who have all traits listed above – the right tools, personality, living situations and so on
INTELLIGENCE
Defining and Measuring
-Textbook: ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and
learn from experience
-Binet began the simple idea that intelligence is a capacity that matters for many aspects of cognitive functioning
oCreating a test that included a range of tasks – performance was assessed with a store
oThis ratio – IQ
-Assessing general knowledge and stuff – others take different formats
