Document Summary

How species interact with each other can have major ecological consequences. Ecological community: all the species in a given area. We are looking at the species level now. That is to say, which are common, which are rare and why. In real natural communities with so many species, there are going to be many interactions and you can construct a food. Web with many lines connecting all the species. Any given focal species will interact with a wide variety of other species. Pair-wise interactions instead of multiple species interactions (which is what normally occurs in nature) to simplify the concepts. The effect of the interaction between one species and another species on each other"s densities. Sometimes, on each other"s presence (whether they can coexist). Competition: two species have to use a limited resource in a local environment, they have reciprocal negative effects on each other"s densities. The presence of species 1 suppresses species 2 and vice-versa.
