Advertising is the result of 4 major factors. 2: the industrial revolution: industrialization floods the marketplace with goods, dependence on this market place. More jobs= ability to consume: transportation and urbanization set the stage for advertising, goods can be produced more efficiently then ever before. 3: emergence of modern branding: manufactures must distinguish their products via branding, brands demand higher prices, brands give manufactures power over retailers. Not just mom and pop shops anymore: advertising supports mass media. We have things like tv shows because brands paid for ads: advertising"s evolution. 1875: pt barnum: 1875 to 1918, consumer culture is born. Branding and advertising become routine, a fixture of the culture. Modernity create a cycle that sustains advertising. The new: society shifts towards prosperity, advertising prays here, instructs how to be modern.
