Document Summary

Culture jam book came out in the late 90s- and also a big part of the 90s. Anomie- sense of normalness (not close ties with families) Disembodied earth- self tied to media steam (iphone use in replace or addition to religion) Noise: natural state- little noise (rain, river, voices, wind)- constant noise from media steam is mental pollutant silence=healthy. Jolts: formal events (on tv changing scene to scene- transitions) 1978-10 per mins; 1999 20 per mins. Shock: media sells fear to get your attention- media logic- overly dramatize basic information. Mind control: laugh tracks (disney)- music, tone of commenter"s, lead you along a constructed emotional narrative. Ads tap into our most basal, innate desires. Electronic media promote instate gratification- if anything going wrong in life, first instinct is to surf away . Promote false communities - self concept tied to media stream (brand community=marketing tactics) No such thing as authenticity in this environment. Children desire purchasing; gives them self control.
