Document Summary

Neuropsychological testing altered mood and deficits in sustained concentration and short-term memory. Most prominent symptom = sleepiness (includes impaired neurocognitive function) Leads to microsleeps - bursts of eeg theta activity. Ex: birds in flight, dolphins (hemi-hemisphere sleep) Ex: davidson et al - subject tracking a target. Delayed responses & misses some cues (stops paying attention - microsleeps) Ex: deprivation method - can be stressful. Don"t alternate like humans - wake up more frequently. Gentle handling - poke as the eeg starts to slow: 24 hr sleep deprivation. Lots of sws in light phase of sleep (especially during the beginning after they"ve been up all night) Becomes harder to wake them up near the end. Disc over water - forced locomotion (nominally yoked control) Two rats on a disc that rotates suspended over a water bath (rats don"t like water) One rat chosen to be experimented on - activates disk to start to move when the eeg slows when falling asleep.
