Document Summary

3/02 - lecture 11 - the evolution of sex (chpt. Variability - ways to have high fitness. Mating success can bottleneck driving variability in fitness in natural selections. Males & females have different limitations for mating. Female success: access to resources - investment in gametes (larger, more costly, fewere made) Male success: access to mates (lots of cheap gametes throughout life) Different limitations causes different variability in fitness between males and females. Sex more limited by resources (fewer offspring & lower variance in reproductive success in natural populations) choosy. Inter- and intra - occur simultaneously - and one can become dominant. Intra - isn"t always always male-male competition: f-f. Ex: male seahorse raises young - lots of parental investment. Ex: brush turkeys - bury eggs in compost piles (don"t directly take care of the eggs but its the behavior) Female making the choice benefits from the choice. Fisher"s runaway (indirect selection) - relies entirely on genetics.
