CSD 308K Lecture 11: Lecture 11
Document Summary
Oralism: parents need to learn about communication philosophy. In 1880 people gathered from all around the world to determine what is the best way to teach deaf children. They determined, based on their own personal ideas, that oralism was the best way to learn. It was really a war between the french (fought for signing)and the german (dutch as allies) fought for oralism. It wasn"t based on merit it was just based on what they thought was best: 1970 to late 1980s: total communication, use of exact systems (manually-coded english) this is english translated into sign it is not. Speech communication skills permit access to society at large, and to restrict or deny opportunity to develop such skills from early infancy is to impose social and intellectual deprivation upon the child already handicapped by hearing impairment. To speak is to what is going to give your child the opportunity to thrive in society at large.
