Document Summary

Gov 312l- discussion in marx, bentham, and burke 1. 9. All grew up at the same time, reading same literature, etc: were all familiar with each other. All object to individualism that liberalism and rights refer to. Both take up french declaration of rights and citizen. Utilitarian (consequences matter, greatest good for most people) Advocated for equal right for women, individual promotion, more rights for kids, etc. even though it seemed like he was anti-rights: thought these rights more happiness. Complaints against declaration of rights and citizens: abuse of right to revolution. Govt made on basis of revolution is bound to fall. Idea of natural rights does not reflect reality i. e. kids are not born free, they are subjugated to their parents for many years that is a good thing: rights promote selfishness and individualism. We don"t need that when govt sometimes asks people to make sacrifices to achieve greatest good for greatest number of people.
