Realism: states are looking out for their own interests, core beliefs: self interested, sovereign states compete for power and security, key actors: states (similar behavior regardless of govt. type, main instruments: military power, diplomacy. Peace of westphalia: occurred in 1648, general meeting of nations to decide who controlled what, key moment in the recognition of sovereignty for states. Birth of the state sovern movement: states can use other states to show power or control other areas of the world.
