Additive effects & cross tolerance: enhance gabaergic function. Continuum of behavioral sedation: (4 therapeutic uses) Normal anxiety relief disinhibition sedation hypnosis (sleep) general anesthesia coma death. Prevent memory formation - even when not unconscious. Barbiturates - sedatives (mostly have been replaced) Phenobarbital - still used in treatment of epilepsy. Classes - duration of action (small window between therapeutic effects & rapid onset and extreme toxicity) No longer used as sedatives, alcohol withdrawal treatment, anxiolytics. Illicit use (often with other drugs - i. e. stimulants or opiates): Severe withdrawal excitability to potential of seizures (opposite of acute effects) Propofol - most widely used for induction anesthetic (iv) Should only be used in operating room. Generic names have az in the name. Many physiological symptoms (dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, frequent urination, exaggerated startle response, etc - due to hyperactivity of autonomic system) Low abuse liability low preference (availability is lower than alcohol)
