PSY 333D Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Lev Vygotsky, Metacognition, Social Cognition
Document Summary
Piaget - children are active members (drive own understanding) in their development through development of motor skills - stage-like. Vygotsky - social support - assisted learning - continuous. Child participates (knows some things) but with interactions with more proficient others in organized practice. Child comes to make relevant moves, correctly time and place moves, eventually to play all roles. Zone spans from what they can do to the potential to what they can with help. Rogoff (1991) - children active participants in zone even if role is limited. Task too easy/infant bored challenge adult for more elaborate involvement. Whining, reaching, asking to do things, etc. As each intermediate goal is accomplished - edged onto next step/goal/reasonable expectation. Relative level of challenge vs level of competence. What learner can currently achieve independently - moved higher to where what the learner can achieve with assistance. Scaffolding occurs through the support of the more knowing other - adult, older child, sibling, etc.
