Document Summary

Ranging from contemplation through preparation and action to maintenance. Change is not a moment in time, but a process across time. Helper"s role is to cultivate this process - help client move to next stage. Developmental sensitivity to stage of change key to helper effectiveness. Developmental sensitivity - refers to where you"re at in your process of change (related to type of help a helper can offer) Transtheoretical model of change = stages of change model - Developed by prochaska, diclemente, and norcross (1992) Prime example - quitting smoking (works naturalistically with this model) 5 stages - sets of qualities, challenges and goals: Can occur for an indefinite amount of time. Unaware of, or in denial of need for change. Clients tend to adopt externalized focus and devise goals that call for someone else to change. Tend to find people who are forced into therapy - lack of motivation (resistance) Acknowledge need to change, but not yet ready to undertake.
