• The Transtheoretical Model (Prochaska et al., 1992)
• Called this because it cuts across other models - you could use ths model and one of the
previous modes discussed
• In this model there are a few diff stages of change
• The trans model measures the readiness for change
• Precontemplation: first stage: in this stage you're either not aware of the prb or haven't
really considered it to be a prb

• Contemplation: you're think about it, youre aware of the prb and youre
contemplating/thinking about it - should I quite smoking or not? - you're thinking abt it
but you're not ready to make a change
• Preparation: when you tend to start the new behv and have began to prepare for it - but u
havent done for it yet ex. If you have decided to quit smoking and im going to buy a vaper

but youre preparing for it
• Action: when you start making overt changes in your behv but you havent really done it
for very long ex. For 6 months or less
• Maintenance: you sustain the changes you made and you resist relapse
Rule of thumb is 6 months- but really just something you've been doing for a while and
trying to sustain the behv
