ANSC 330 Lecture 11: ANSC 330 Lab 3
Document Summary
Indicates the percentage of apparent absorbed protein that is utilized to produce protein in the animal. Typical bv of animal proteins: 60 90+% Limitations: only accounts for the utilization of what is absorbed, does not take into account digestibility. Bv% = [n intake (urinary n + fecal n)] / (n intake fecal n) x 100. More useful than bv alone because it paints a more complete picture of protein utilization. It is more useful because it expresses utilization as a function of what was consumed, not just what was digested. Npv% = bv x digestion coefficient: where, digestion coefficient = fractional percentage digestibility. Bv and npv are used as indicators of the availability of protein to animals. In other words the amount of protein they can actually utilize relative to what they consumed.
