Ece as a profession: child development history & theories 01/19/16. Child development relatively new area of study . Child study as an academic field emerged in the 18th century. Nature nurture question: are children who they are because of their heredity/genetic makeup. Pre-renaissance church view: the child is inherently evil. Rousseau and the little-angel view: the child is inherently good and innocent. Natural development, with minimal adult intervention & supervision. More recent thoughts on the nature of the child. Interested in human potential and what motivates people. Applied developmental research to policy and practice. View of the individual within a context. Ecological model: early childhood practitioners must shift focus from child alone to family and community, and maintain focus on context as an important factor in growth and development. Charles darwin (1809-1882): journals of his own children marked the beginning of a scientific approach to child study.
