Normative social influence results in public compliance (conforming without actually believing what you are doing) with the group"s beliefs and behaviors but not necessarily private acceptance (conforming to someone"s behavior because they believe they are right) of them. Public compliance adhering to social norms in a given situation. Social norm implicit or explicit rules a group has for the acceptable behaviors, values, and beliefs of its members. Nontrivial example body image conform to cultural definitions of an attractive body. As reliability of the food supply increases, preference for heavy/moderate bodies decreases. Informational social influence women learn what body type is considered attractive in their culture (and how they compare) We learn from family, friends, and media. Sororities (crandall, 1988) develop group norms regarding eating disorders. Normative social influence binge eating, then new members conformed to their sorority"s group norms. Cultural norms for men"s bodies have also changed over time.
