Document Summary
Phonology = study of sounds systems of languages. Phonetics says [k] in skit but [k ] in kit. Phonology says it"s the same sound to a native speaker (but let"s see where we see [k] and where we see [k ] Phonology is mostly concerned w. the contrastive sounds of a language. [k] and [k ] aren"t contrastive in english bc which version of /k/ that we get is predictable based on its position in the word and syllable. We can even apply rules to made up words. When picking b/t two sounds is not possible, we say they are different phonemes, write w/ / >> /d/, /b/, /k/ When picking between sounds is possible or predictable, they are different allophones of a single phoneme, write w/ brackets >> [k], [k ] Which differ only in one segment in the same position.
