NFS 043 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Leptin, Ghrelin, Glycogen
Document Summary
Results from eating more food than your body requires. Protein: excess amino acids converted to glucose or fat. Alcohol: stored as fat, also slows down the process of using fat for fuel -> more fat stored. Satiety: perception of fullness that lingers in the hours after a meal and inhibits eating until the next meal time. Appetite: psychological desire to eat. you can have an appetite without hunger. smells, sights, weather, culture, hormones, and social influences can all impact appetite. Ghrelin: secreted by the stomach, works on the hypothalamus to stimulate appetite. All of the factors that stimulate appetite. Diminished sensations of pleasure from a repeated taste or texture. Nerve stretch receptors sense stomach distention and signal brain that stomach is full. Nutrients in small intestine trigger hormones that signal hypothalamus about size and nature of meal. Nutrients in the bloodstream sensed by brain: releases neurotransmitters to suppress food intake.
