The treatment of pku involves the immediate and lifelong avoidance of excessive dietary phenylalanine which is: an amino acid. If not treated or detected, then patient can experience severe to profound mental retardation and mental difficulties. Some milk or moderate versions, not as severe: less risk of brain damage. Most patients with pku will need to follow a lifelong, restricted diet: not exposed to excessive dietary phenylalanine, eggs, quinoa, large piece of steak, chicken animal based proteins. Limited protein diet for life recommended: low protein diet. Breastmilk is a complete protein: a child with pku should not be breastfed.
