Wafd party pushed for independence in the 20th century. Became independent in 1922 with a monarchy, but british troops stayed: signed a treaty to remove british troops in the world war two era, but they maintained control of the suez canal. People unhappy with weakness of the king and the free officers formed: fo overthrew and exiled the king in 1952, took power; nasser became the sole ruler. Nasser"s rule defined by pan-arabism and socialism (1) sought arab unity and cultural solidarity (2) broke up large landowners and redistributed land, promoted education. The muslim brotherhood initially supported nasser, but opposed his secularism and attempted an assassination in 1954: nasser outlawed them and started a campaign of arrests.
