Document Summary

Solutions to the tragedy of the commons: remove the profit motive of exploiting land. Tragedy of the commons applies to all human relationships with the natural world. Social construction of nature is how we give meaning to objects that we deem natural. It is a social expression: how cultures view nature differs, knowledge doesn"t have to be objectively true in order to have a social influence. The power that the social institution holds is important. Instrumental value of nature: what does nature provide for humans: views nature as external, opposed to humans. Intrinsic value of nature: what value does nature have independent of humans: views nature as something occurring beyond humans, which has processes that are not intended for us to benefit from solely. Human exceptionalist paradigm (hep): early idea about nature saw humans as unique and exempted us from nature: humans are center of all, and try to use nature instrumentally to benefit ourselves.
