Funding reduced by medicaid and medicare for large/expensive facilities. Emptying out of large state mental hospitals began (today often used as prisons) Establishment of a network of local mental community clinics became responsibility of the cities/towns/local regions. Mentally ill or disturbed never had any help and were left to fend for themselves in the streets. Physical disabilities, together with psychiatric and developmental disabilities, are types of disabilities we will look at, together with illness (impaired health) About 15 out of every 100 people in the world has a disability. Between 2 and 4 people out of every 100 have really severe disabilities. There are more people with disabilities partly because people live longer and are more likely to become disabled, as they get older. Females, old-aged, and poor are overrepresented among disabled. Disability prevalence higher in low income countries.
