People with severe mental disorders were considered to be allies of the devil. In the 18th-20th century, people with severe mental illness were hospitalized, often under inadequate conditions. Deinstitutionalization, begun in the 1950s in the us, was a response to both the failure of large mental institutions and the (cid:862)success(cid:863) of antipsychotic drugs. Pinel believed these were more like diseases and we should treat them. Antipsychotic drugs were being developed, deinstitutionalization, with medication capable of controlling some of the most severe symptoms of mental illness, people could be returned to their community and be helped properly.
