Document Summary

Typically have a hydrogen in the front or the formula or a cooh group (carboxylic acid group) Taste bitter and feel slippery referred to as alkali . Tend to have a hydroxide (oh-) at the back of the formula. There are three general definitions for acids and bases. Acids produce hydrogen ions (h+) in aqueous solution. Bases produce hydroxide ions (oh-) in aqueous solution. Hydronium ions (h3o+) is formed upon reaction of a proton with a water molecule. H+ and h3o+ are used interchangeably in most situations (however, h3o+ is the real chemical species. Example: ha(aq) + h2o(l) h3o+(aq) + a- (aq) Or ha(aq) h+(aq) + a- (aq) acid base conj. acid conj. base conjugate base- everything that remains after an acid has lost its proton. This species can now act as a base by accepting a proton and turning back into its acid conjugate acid- the base after accepting a proton.
