Media effects can be cognitive, affective, attitudinal, behavioral, physiological. Little support for magic bullet notions of media effects. Causality needs three things to be true. Main points: overview of the cultural indicators and cultivation projects, mean-world syndrome, mainstreaming, new media cultivation. Told and retold-most we know we haven"t actually experienced. Tv made storytelling a centralized, standardized system. Today tv tells the largest amount of stories to the largest number of people. Tv exposes communication to an aggregate and repetitive system of image that a communication/communicator adopts over time. National commision on the causes and prevention of violence (1967) By 12 years old we will witness 8,000 homicides and 10,000 violent acts. Institutional analysis-how messages are produced and distributed. Message system analysis-what is the re-occuring media content. Cultivation analysis-how tv exposure molds views of the real world. 3 hours a day on average in the 80"s. Ratings heavily depended on the show before hand.
