Stability in society allows absorptions of values. Soviet society in the 1920"s was going through rapid and unpredictable changes which prevented people to absorb a certain set of values. Lyutov identity is in flux -- he is trying to figure out who he is and what role he plays. The narrator is an educated jew who is record keeping for anti-semitic cossacks who work for the communist soviets.
